What Award-Winning Projects Reveal About Design, Sustainability and Shopper Experience
Two Silver Awards for the Maybelline New York Smart Wall and a Bronze Award for the ELEMIS Christmas FSDUs mark a significant achievement for Array Marketing. Beyond recognising two individual projects, the awards offer a closer look at how thoughtful design, sustainability, technology and shopper insight can come together to create distinctive retail experiences.
Created in response to very different briefs, both projects reflect the same principle: the strongest retail solutions are shaped around the needs of the brand, retailer, shopper and environment, rather than built from a standard formula. The question is not simply how to make a display stand out, but how to make it work harder throughout its life.
Recognition That Goes Beyond the Awards
The POPAI UK & Ireland Awards celebrate excellence in physical retail, recognising displays and shopper experiences that advance creativity, innovation and responsible design.
For Array Marketing, participating goes far beyond industry recognition. It allows us to benchmark our work against leading retail solutions and demonstrate the impact of our creative and technical decisions.
In the beauty sector, success depends on translating a consistent global identity into experiences that feel distinctive and relevant in every market. That means considering not only brand expression and product discovery, but also the constraints of the store, the realities of merchandising and the performance of a display throughout its lifecycle.
A New Benchmark for Responsible Permanent Display
The one-meter Maybelline New York Smart Wall received two Silver Awards, in Cosmetics & Beauty – Permanent Display and Sustainability – Permanent Display categories. Designed for independent beauty retailers in Ireland, it translates the brand’s “Window to New York” concept within a compact space.
The display combines refined design and adaptable merchandising with responsive lighting that activates as shoppers approach. Crucially, the lighting was developed as an energy-efficiency measure: rather than illuminating the fixture at full intensity continuously, it responds to activity in front of the display. Shopper visibility and presentation are maintained while unnecessary energy use is reduced.
Sustainability was built into the concept from the outset. The display incorporates 91% recycled content, alongside material optimisation, fascia ultralight construction and interchangeable components, demonstrating how thoughtful material selection and engineering can reduce environmental impact while supporting long-term adaptability. The display achieved a 31% lower lifecycle carbon footprint per unit and used 62% less lighting energy. The project demonstrates how environmental responsibility, premium design and commercial objectives can be addressed together, rather than treated as competing priorities.
The wider lesson is that responsible retail design is not limited to choosing recycled materials. Decisions about lighting, weight, modularity, logistics and refurbishment can influence a fixture’s environmental impact long after installation. Permanent displays need to remain useful as assortments and retail requirements change; designing for that adaptability from day one matters.
Seasonal Theatre Meets Commercial Performance
The ELEMIS Christmas FSDUs received a Bronze Award in Cosmetics & Beauty – Temporary Display category. The project answered a very different challenge: how to attract attention during the busiest and most visually competitive period in the beauty retail calendar, while keeping gifting offers easy to find and merchandise.
Inspired by the magic of a snow globe, the display brought the festive campaign to life through curved forms, frosted seasonal details and a prominent space for featured gift sets. Its three-sided format made products visible and accessible from several directions, creating an engaging experience that remained easy to navigate.
But the creative idea was only one part of the solution. A dedicated area for hero products and gifts-with-purchase allowed the space to adapt to evolving weekly commercial priorities. Interchangeable graphics and updatable elements allowed teams to refresh messaging and featured products without replacing the whole unit. That flexibility matters during a short, high-pressure trading season, when promotions and product priorities can change quickly.
Behind its visual impact was a flexible system that could be adapted to different retail environments. What began as a two-retailer brief developed into a wider rollout across department stores, specialist beauty retailers and spa locations. The design therefore had to balance a consistent festive brand story with the practical requirements of different spaces.
The project demonstrates how imaginative seasonal storytelling, combined with thoughtful merchandising and operational flexibility, can support commercial objectives during a critical trading period.
The POPAI judges also recognised the combination of premium presentation, three-sided shopability, interchangeable panels and efficient space use. The takeaway for seasonal retail is clear: theatre captures attention, but product hierarchy, accessibility and operational flexibility help turn that attention into a useful shopping experience.
The Forces Reshaping Beauty Retail
Together, the awarded projects reflect a broader shift in the meaning of retail innovation. It is no longer simply about adding more technology or creating the most elaborate display. Increasingly, innovation means improving the complete experience and eliminating unnecessary complexity.
The Maybelline Smart Wall shows how technology can serve a defined purpose: responsive lighting reduces energy demand rather than adding digital features for their own sake. ELEMIS demonstrates a different kind of intelligence: merchandising elements that can be refreshed as campaign evolves, without rebuilding the fixture.
Sustainability is evolving in a similar way. Recycled content and recyclability remain important, but so do weight reduction, transport efficiency, refurbishment, modularity and the ability to update individual elements instead of replacing an entire display. These decisions can also make fixtures easier to operate and maintain.
For beauty brands, these priorities create opportunities for more curated and diverse retail experiences. A global identity can remain consistent while each execution is adapted to a particular retailer, shopper mission, campaign moment or store format. The challenge is knowing which elements must stay consistent and which should be flexible.
Different Expressions, One Connected Approach
There is no single formula for an effective beauty display. A permanent fixture may prioritise longevity, energy efficiency and ease of maintenance. A temporary campaign may call for visual impact, flexible messaging and rapid installation. Each retail environment may also require adjustments to scale, finish, product capacity or graphic execution.
Our role is to connect these requirements without diluting the brand. We begin with the shopper and the commercial objective, then bring together the right design, engineering, technology, materials and manufacturing approach. The Maybelline and ELEMIS projects show why these disciplines cannot be treated in isolation: a creative choice has operational consequences, and an engineering choice can improve the shopper experience.
The result is not uniformity, but retail experiences that feel right for their surroundings: premium where the environment demands it, expressive where the campaign calls for it and efficient throughout the display’s lifecycle.
These award-winning projects underline a practical principle for brands and retailers: define what the display needs to achieve, then design every element – from materials and lighting to navigation and changeovers – to support that purpose. That is how distinctive in-store experiences can also be responsible, adaptable and commercially relevant.
